Mission Accomplished

I've been off the radar for a few months working over at Prologue. The final mission, as we accepted was Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol! I have to say the amount of time we had was intense, you could find me mumbling that it was truly, "The Impossible Mission".

I finally had the guts to go watch it. Surprisingly I liked the movie and it was super enjoyable! I held my breath watching the titles though, it was a huge blur. I was so nervous. However, there is nothing better than to see your work up on the big screen with a full audience. The team I worked with was incredible, and now that the madness is over, I miss them all very much. It was rough, but we had some good times!

Go watch it! Lots of A113 Easter Eggs to be found too!

Almost done! I'm slightly sleep deprived and kooky but... here are my little fish! Raul had pointed out that they should be called: "Floatsam and Jetsam", which is super clever! Anyway, in two weeks I hope to put some water-like distortion that trails behind them and give them a bit more compositing love.

I decided to do something fun, and colorful, because I've been lacking some color in my work, so here are some paper plants. At least these won't die on you! Last Time Back!

The last season of Otis. I cannot wait to get out of here! Anyway... I'm sure it hasn't hit me yet that it's technically my last time back at Otis.

To start off, I thought I'd enjoy my last weekend of the semester. I ended up having to pay the horrible price of an all-nighter, but nonetheless got a little quicker at modeling and lighting. Here are a few Chris Eckardt assignments, the first one more so modeling and the second one lighting.

I'm actually considering re-rendering, cleaning up the animation and giving it a bit more comp work over the break. I had a lot of fun with this, so I think it can get a bit more love. Of course I modeled an NES for my Advanced Concepting class! At any rate, I'm going to come back to this later to make the shaders more believable as well as the textures. The game cartridges are of Zelda, Mario and Donkey Kong. I wish I had an NES.

I'll post wireframes later! Made in Maya and comped in AE.

I actually enjoyed this alot, so it's safe to say it is definately a WIP.

It was really exciting and awesome to be working on this project with everyone... it was so much fun, even when school and Georgia Power started to merge. It all turned out really great. Chrysler Sebring!

Another car lighting assignment. I figured out what was wrong with my aliasing from last time. It was a definite facepalm moment--just saving on half from AE to Photoshop. At any rate, Chris supplied us with the Chrysler Sebring model. This was done in Maya, comped in AE, and final touches/background where done in Photoshop.

The model was pretty intense, I'm surprised my laptop could handle it. I only have 6 GB of RAM. Man did I push my lappy! That'll do HP laptop, that'll do.

I know that somewhere the aliasing went bad... but it's okay, I'm fixing that next week!

It needs more work, but it's good for now! The model was supplied by Chris, while I worked on the lighting and texturing in Maya with compositing work in Photoshop. It's nice getting back into the fourth and final season of Otis! And... wait for it, more animation work coming next week! SIGGRAPH 2010: The People Behind the Pixels

SIGGRAPH was such an experience, now that it's over I'm kinda really sad! I'm going to miss it so much! Next year, Vancouver-- I am so there! I was there as a 30 hour Student Volunteer and I was working from Saturday the 24 til Thursday the 29th. It was my first time and I had no idea how to navigate around the LA Convention Center... but I now know it to a T, saw some awesome lectures and worked with amazing people! I met a lot of people and came out making a bunch of friends! I don't know, but the word "networking" is a dry word to me. It's nice to relate to these people in ways aside from business and actually be human and fun.

I didn't take so many photos because I was so busy most of the time, or that you weren't allowed to take photos-- so I respected that. Some lecturers I was lucky enough to catch were: Ed Catmull, Eric Goldberg, and Tom Gasek, who I was so very lucky and had the greatest pleasure to get to work with through SIGGRAPH! He's such an amazing, smart and warm person, he worked on Coraline, Creature Comforts, Wallace and Gromit and many more. I got to run around with him taking time-lapse photos and did stop-motion with a program called Dragon Stop Motion. Anyway Catmull and his Pixar crew had a few wise words;

"When something is aborted, there is a lot of emotional attachments to these projects or things-- especially the need to protect the unknown potential that it could have had. However, know that you have the strength to move on, to acknowledge what is working and to value that."

But on a lighter note Catmull said things like this;

"I knew that I liked making visuals. I was just allergic to turpentine so I could not work with oils. Now with pixels, you can't be allergic to that!"

Anyway I got to hang out with some awesome and funny people from Pixar, The Mill (who gave me their flashdrive full of their presentation and breakdowns!), Animal Logic, Nexus, Escape Studios and Rhythm and Hues! Then some days I would have 4 hours Off-Shift so this would happen:

^ One day my friends came to visit! Roger and Margolit!

^Then Craig and Matt! Psyop represent!

^ We found Post-its from Aaron Hartline an Animator at Pixar and teacher at Animation Mentor! Then he tweeted about us!

^ Awesome SV friends at Teardown!

^ One of the after-parties, I filled up on gas and came back to my car to find out everybody pitched in to help me but crammed all the money into my dashboard. I love you guys.

Yay! This week has been awesome!

^ Our VFX Final! I got to work with Jay and Mccue on this and they where the best people I've ever worked with (...being really good friends also helped)! Initially it just started out with me wanting to do a neon piece, but Raul pushed us to span it out on a story. Jay did a lot of shader/neon light testing to achieve the look, rigged the characters, prepped and rendered all the passes. Mccue and I worked a lot on the story/development/boards, and Mccue saw it all out with Previs, modeling the Lion character, and helping to animate the beginning deer shots, then comping it all together with Nuke. I modeled the Deer family, animated/finalized most shots, treated the footage and final comp in Nuke. It was a pretty awesome experience... I think we had 5 weeks to work on it.

I'm glad with how the styling turned out! Chris said the styling could be fit for an animation too... hmmm? I would do something different, but I would still use a color AO. Color AOs are so much fun!

I also have stuff from my animation class with Bobby Coddington, but I want to tweak it some more before posting it. Oh so the Internship Fair went pretty sweet! Plus me and my friends just played with 40 Third grade students over at the Loyola Elementary School! So much fun! I don't know how I did it after working all night, then prepping the day for them and having class from 3 pm till 9 pm... I say it's a day well accomplished!

OH! and I have to say this first of all things... I met and got to talk to Neville Page! Man that guy is like a genius! Luckily I had also just bought January's 3D World Mag earlier that day, and was able to get him to sign it too!

He was really awesome to talk to, and I can't explain how awesome it was! He wrote, "Be Furious, Be Focused, Be Fabulous!" Great words of inspiration!

Okay... now on to:

However, here's a little organic model i did in 9ish hours for Chris. I still need to give him color and textures later, however it's a semi real figure of Captain Steiner form Final Fantasy IX!

FLIES! So many flies! This week we had some time to experiment with a fly that Chris Eckardt supplied us with. We had to rig the little bug up and shade/texture it up. I actually enjoyed it a lot, so here's the stuff:

This was a really quick, unpolished version of an assignment for Bobby's class! It's the first time I've ever done anything with character/mild acting and facial animation. The audio is from the 11 Second Club! It was a lot of fun! Plus the crit he gave me was worth GOLD!

OTIS Season 3 Cont.

First week back! Here's some work to have a look-see at:

I have a few poses here with Bobby Coddington's rig! He's one of the reasons why I got into 3D in the first place. He's such an amazing teacher, having him again this semester is so kick ass!

And of course, Chris Eckardt's homework! There is way more I have to fix/remake, but punching these out in the tightest of times is pretty stressful/fun and I love it. It just forces me to work faster and smarter. Anyway this assignment was to just model a bathroom and to only use surface shaders to light the scene (which kinda pinched me because I love using directional lights... and taught me more about lighting surfaces):

YAY! Then on Friday morning me, Sonya and Young visited and exercised with the Senior Citizens of Westchester! They are more flexible than we are! Plus they are so sweet! Then we met Sam, who was really quiet, but the best part was that he was playing chess and looked EXACTLY like Geri, from Pixar's short "Geri's Game"!

DONE!!

It was an AMAZING and really awesome semester! To me, after a really really quick turn around from doing concept, and turning a new corner into 3D/VFX and Character Animation, I'm totally grateful for it! Just meeting people from Siggraph LA, like Damien from Pixerati, to working at Mobile Motion with MoCap and Augmented Reality, and learning all these new programs--this has been such an exciting and fun year, even with the all nighters and hard work! What's best of all, are my friends/work companions who worked/played through it with me! Their finals are pretty sweet and their links are on the sidebar, so go check it out!

Wow this assignment was so much fun, I'm actually going to do more of it later! Though it's a simple 3D tracking assignment for Chris Eckardt with some render passes/simple compositing, this was sooooo bad ass! JD had some sicker ones, even if he won't admit. Just waiting for all the passes to render just made it even more exciting!

The tutorial on CG Tuts was like a Mrs. Fields Cookie Recipie--you follow what they say and it tastes NOTHING like the real stuff you buy lol. The recipe's lacking some, so you can't get it exactly the way you want it without really using your brain or extra trial and error. Still it was fun to make and didn't take long at all!

Anyways, working at Mobile Motion has been so awesome! Life is so busy as usual, and a bit challenging because of working and schooling at the same time, so here's a looksie at some more school work! I guess that getting busy with the things you want to do, but also have NO idea how to do it is the best thing ever! You learn so much! So for the first three weeks of school I luckily took it up so quickly-- it has become so EXCITING and AWESOME. So here, take this work dump below!

First off, 3D CHARACTER ANIMATION! the class I'm most excited about!

And this was for my 3D Animation class where we began to learn how to model in NURBS. It's funny because NURBS stand for Non-Uniform Rational B-Spline... but when you work on it, it's not very rational, rather very irrational lol! But at any rate, I modeled a True Blood Bottle as I waited for the Season Finale!

Oh and of course everything starts out with balls:

Also I got to go to D23, but I'll save that for a later! Hope you guys are cruisen on fine! I feel like everything starts in September!

Noob Progress

It's a ball bounce! Plus some squash and stretch! It gets funky on the second to last bounce and when it begins to stop, I feel a bit like a noob, but it's progress I'd say. Especially because it helped me overcome my fear of the graph editor!

In other news, a couple of friends and I went over to Gnomon to attend the making of Pixar's UP, a lecture lead by Gary Bruins. It was pretty exciting!

San Diego Comic-Con 2009: the Greatest Adventure!

To sum everything up...Comic-Con 2009 was totally AMAZING. Not only was it my first time there, but I had been wanting to go for about FIVE years. Back in the day when I was a wee kiddie in Chiang Mai, I religiously followed the blogs/websites of Enrico Casarosa, Kazu Kibuishi, and Kean Soo. So when they got to go to Comic-Con, they would blog and post pictures about it, and be uber excited about EVERYTHING! and so, I got excited by everything and promised myself that I would have to make it to Comic-Con one day, even if I would have to fly there over to the States. I respected these guys and their work so much that I wanted to meet them in person and to work in their industry. So thanks to these guys, they became one of the reasons of why I came to California.

So guys, I've been really busy at work here at Jirbo and EpicTilt working on iPhone games, and hopefully before the end of summer, some of the games I've worked on will be up and on sale on iTunes! My good friend Michelle will actually get to see some of her work in the next two weeks. I'm really excited for her! The crew there is awesome, and I'll draw some cartoons of them soooooon.

Anyway, I'm homeward bound to the motherland...Thailand, so I've just been hanging around with some good friends, taking it easy and reading The Animator's Surival Kit, and just watching a lot of fundimental 3D animation tutorials, especially my good professor's Coddington's Gnomon stuff! And, surprisingly I'm all cool with this stuff just soaking in, and it's beginning to make sense :) hopefully I'll get to do some noobish animation ball bounce, character posing and some walk cycle before OTIS: season 3 starts!

Speaking of animation...TRANSFORMERS 2 was AWESOME! Of course I had problems with the story and some of the characters, but the VFX and Animation just blew me away. Hands down for ILM, Digital Domain, Imaginary Forces and all the other companies. This is our future industry guys!

Alright, I hope your summer is going well! LA has finally decided to get all warm and sunny. Oh and RIP Michael Jackson, Farrah Fawcett, and Billy Mays.

You know, I'm a big fan of Hitchcock. I found this on Harald Siepermann blog, and by the way, he has some coooool drawings and a pretty interesting interview that concerns European/German influences on animation, cartoons and design.

Anyway:

I'M IN TEXAS...well, New Braunfels to be precise, to visit JD's parents and to have him show me his town.

It was a rough 22 hour drive with some 10 minute breaks now and then--to get gas, spread the legs and switched back and forth with the JD--King of Cruise Control, but man I drove through some dust storm (which I guess wasn't something good to do), saw some crazy cool mountains in Arizona, a coyote in New Mexico, crazy stars and a huge monstrous moon, an awesome sunrise and once I was driving down into the town, a fresh dead dear with two vultures ripping it apart. Man I wish I took a picture of that. But I had SONIC for the first time and it was sweet.

I'll be posting some things and sketches once I get back to the great LA... that means WONDEROUS ANIMATION TUTORIALS!!!! YES!

OH YEAH!! First stop motion...EVER!

This was my final for Keith's class. I worked on this with Michelle for about 3 weeks. It's an alright stop motion piece, with some awesome bits!! It involves objects that we normally take for granted, which have a life of their own. A sock is separated from it's other pair and goes off in search of it!

Anyway here are some pre-production/production pictures!

p.s. rotoscoping bits took forever to do even though some of the shots varied from 3-5 seconds...72-120 FRAMES!! it payed off though! :D

So on Tuesday I got to go to RHYTHM AND HUES with some of my friends in our Studio Visits class! and it was awesome to not only see the work they did, but to actually see them working on it together as a team, and in their big studio rooms, and then to see that they're human and that they actually chill together and have fun.

One of my assignments from the Intro to 3D class was to animate a ball--and I came up with the idea of making Mousetrap the board game. Man, I totally was one of those kids who wanted Mousetrap so badly, but never got it. So I guess I have Mousetrap now!

Oh and aside from that--here's the painting I used for the back of my business card. I kept thinking after I turned in the assignment to Jung Park, that it could totally be something from the Land Before Time and a herd of Brontosaurus would pop out from behind the mountain...

Check this out--my first animation assignment. I looked at some robot arm photos from google as reference, modeled for 3 hours and then animated! So it's a bit wonky in some frames, but I mainly just learned from it. It's from my Intro to 3D class with Bobby Coddington as my teacher, and the awesome Craig Christian as the TA.

The words "ellipsis" and "closure" are two random things, which are however moving in a parallel manner together. Putting these two together stimulate creativity through their double meanings--hence an inspiration for this blog!
